Let’s explore regenerative chicken farming for food security in Kenya
In the rolling landscapes of Homa Bay and Webuye, Kenya, a quiet but powerful movement is taking root — one chicken coop at a time.
At Springboard Connectivity, we believe that transformation begins with small, intentional actions. Through our latest initiative, Chickens for Health and Wealth, we’re equipping six families with everything they need to raise their own flock: materials for coops sized for 25–50 birds, supplies for feeding and watering, and guidance on holistic, natural care.
Why chickens? Because in times of drought, floods, or crop failure, a flock of chickens can be the difference between scarcity and survival, between hunger and hope.
Why Chickens Matter
In Kenya, unpredictable weather patterns — intensified by climate change — have made traditional farming harder than ever. Floods wash away fields. Pests devour harvests. Droughts wither crops.
When harvests fail, families often reach out asking for help buying food or pesticides. But what if we could build resilience before crisis arrives?
By providing families with chickens, we’re not just giving them food — we’re giving them:
- A steady source of nutrient-dense eggs
- A chance to sell surplus eggs or chicks for income
- A system that regenerates soil health through manure and natural tilling
- A daily rhythm of care and connection with life
Eggs: A Miracle Food
Eggs are among the most nutrient-dense foods on Earth — often called “nature’s multivitamin.” Just one egg contains:
- 6 grams of high-quality complete protein
- Vitamins A, D, E, K (fat-soluble vitamins critical for immunity and cellular health)
- B12 and folate (for energy and brain function)
- Choline (essential for brain development and liver health)
- Selenium, zinc, and iron
- Omega-3s (especially if chickens are pasture-fed)
- Lecithin (supports healthy cholesterol and detoxification)

“Eggs are remarkable for everyone, especially those who are infirm.”
— Aajonus Vonderplanitz, The Recipe for Living Without Disease
With these nutrients, eggs help fill the gaps left by a diet often dominated by corn, beans, and greens. They’re a food security powerhouse — easy to grow, store, and share.
🐔 Chickens & Regenerative Agriculture: A Natural Partnership
Beyond nutrition, chickens are powerful allies in creating a regenerative farm ecosystem. Their natural behaviors — scratching, pecking, manuring — aerate soil, add fertility, and reduce pests. This aligns with one of the five principles of regenerative agriculture: integrating animals into the system.
We want our farmers to see their chickens not just as food, but as partners in healing the land.

And in alignment with our belief in natural health, we’re encouraging families to raise their chickens without vaccines or synthetic treatments, using holistic herbal remedies instead.
✨ We’ve provided each family with a Holistic Chicken Care Guide — a simple resource full of natural solutions for common poultry issues, featuring remedies like garlic, turmeric, neem, and oregano to support immunity, digestion, and disease prevention.

We believe that caring for animals holistically strengthens the entire ecosystem — supporting the health of the chickens, the farmers, the soil, and the community as a whole.
A Holistic Model for Food & Health Security
This project is more than chicken coops. It’s a step toward:
✅ Improved household nutrition
✅ A safety net when crops fail
✅ New income streams for women and families
✅ Increased biodiversity on the farm
✅ A model for sustainable, replicable food systems
We’re already hearing excitement from the women of Malaha, who see these chickens as both an opportunity and a gift.
“We are so happy and excited to begin raising chickens. We believe this will give us income and better ways to nourish our community.”
Where We Go From Here
In November 2025, we’ll gather and share the outcomes of this experiment. How many eggs were harvested? How many chicks were sold? What difference did chickens make for nutrition, income, and hope?
What we already know is this: when we invest in small systems that feed both body and soil, we grow more than food — we grow resilience, dignity, and possibility.
This is just one piece of Springboard’s larger vision: a regenerative, diversified, nourishing future for all.
